
Goals to Capacity
The capacity area function is to ensure the capacity of the systems so that there is no
capacity on the servers so that the infrastructure can support the business of the company.
A fundamental goal of managing capacity is to avoid purchasing additional capacity.
Proper management of IT capacity includes reclaiming unused resources, and these
reclaimed
Resources can then be assigned to a new project.
In a poorly managed environment, each project begins with the purchase of new hardware
and software which will be used by that project alone.
This approach is wasteful because each project uses only a portion of the capacity it
purchases.
The second goal for capacity management is to avoid running out of resources.
That achieves the goal of not purchasing additional hardware, but eventually you will find
that there simply isn’t enough room for the next new database that must be added.
The third goal of capacity management is thus to smooth out the acquisition cycle.
In an unplanned model, capacity is added when you notice that your existing capacity is
exhausted.
When capacity management is in effect, you can predict in advance where new capacity will
be needed and ensure that it is available when new projects are ready to take advantage of
it.
A fourth goal for capacity management is to predict future capacity needs.
It is not sufficient to simply observe historical growth patterns because there may be
business events that alter those patterns. Nor is it practical to assume that your user or
project teams will be able to tell you how much capacity they will need in the future.
